Eusko Alkartasuna (Basque Solidarity) was founded following a split in the PNV because a confrontation of one sector of the party leadership (E.B.B.) led by Arzallus. It resulted in the dismissal of the then "lehendakari" Carlos Garaikoetxea.

Registered as a political party in October 1986, it held its constituent Congress in April 1987. In its statutes it defines its political ideology as being similar to thgat of the PNV, but emphasizes tha nationalist element by calling for self-determination for the Basque Country.

In the 1989 general election it had two deputies elected, and in the 1993 election, one seat in Congress and one in the Senate.
