Founded at the beginning of 1978 under the name of Aragonese Regionalist Party, it stood for all the elections until 1986 as part of the Popular Coalition. Since the 1986 general election it has stood alone and in the regional elections of June 1987 it obtained 19 parliamentary seats.

In the general elections of 1989 and 1993, it won 1 deputy's seat.

At the Party's 6th Congress, held in February 1990, the name of this political group was changed to that of Aragonese Party in order to show its nationalist character, although it kept the initials of its previous name (PAR).
