The parties which form this coalition were founded at the beginning of the thirties. Overall, their ideology is centrist, and they are markedly nationalist in character.

Led by Jordi Pujol, this political coalition has governed in Catalonia since the first autonomy elections after the Constitution of 1978 and it is the regional party which has most deputies and senators in the Cortes Generales (17 in the Congress of Deputies and 14 in the Senate, June 1993).
