Spanish Communist Party (PCE) Socialist Action Party (PASOC) Republican Left and independents
The United Left was set up on April 27th, 1986, as an election coalition consisting of the following parties: Spanish Communist Party, Progressive Federation, Party of the Peoples of Spain, Socialist Action Party, Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia, Humanist Party, Carlist Party, Republican Left and a number of independents. At the end of 1986, the Carlist Party and the Humanist Party left the coalition; later the Progressive Federation did so too. The Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain (PCPE) merged with the PCE (Partido Comunista Espanol), and Iniciativa per Catalunya associated with the coalition but kept its full autonomy.
In 1986 general election, the United Left had 7 deputies elected, but obtained a spectacular increase in 1989 with 17 representatives in Congress and 1 senator. At the present time, following the elections of 1993, it has 18 deputies and 2 senators.
