On 24th September 1980, in the city of Oviedo, the Prince of Asturias Foundation was formed in a solemn ceremony presided over by His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias, accompanied by his parents, Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain.

Among the main objectives of the Foundation are those of strengthening the links between the Principality of Asturias and its Prince and of contributing to upholding and promoting all those scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form, principally, the heritage of the community of Latin-American peoples and, in general, of humanity.

As the symbol of the nature and aims of the Foundation, and adopting the title which has belonged historically to the Heir to the Crown of Spain, the Prince of Asturias Awards have been created, aimed at rewarding the scientific, cultural and social work performed by individuals, groups and institutions whose achievements represent an example for mankind.

Since 1981, the Prince of Asturias Foundation has granted the Prince of Asturias Awards which are presented annually by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Asturias, Honourary President of the Institution, in a solemn academic ceremony.

There are eight Prince of Asturias Awards: five of these for the Latin-American world (Communications and Humanity, Arts, Literature, Social Sciences and Technical and Scientific Research) and the remaining three open to all. In any case, candidates may be presented for each one of the Latin-American awards who, while not belonging to these countries but meeting the requirements governing these awards, have made a significant contribution to culture and science in Latin-America.
