LOGRONO, a Roman river port and part of the Route of St. James, is today the capital of the Autonomous Community of La Rioja. La Rioja is a small region located in the northeastern part of the Peninsula and it is the most outstanding wine-growing area in Spain. Its production, Rioja Wine, figures among the finest wines in the world.

Haro, around which are located the better part of the winegrowers, is the region's most important viticultural centre. Its life revolves almost exclusively around wine, with which the natives happily dowse one another on the major feast day, aptly known as 'the battle of the wine'.
