In 1978 it was granted a pre-autunomy regime and on January 11th 1982 its Autonomy Statute came into force, whereby it officially recovered the historic name of Principality of Asturias.

The Principality of Asturias was set up as an Autonomous Community by Organic Law 7/1981, December 30th (B.O.E. 11-1-82).
