In 1978, Aragon was granted a pre-autonomy regime and began the procedure to obtain a Statute of Autonomy, which came into force on August 16th, 1982.

Aragon was set up as an Autonomous Community under Organic Law 5/1983, August 10th (B.O.E. 16-9-82).
