25 Years of Excellence.

In 1994, Iberia Airlines of Spain calebrated 25 years of consecutive operations to Canada.

Montreal and Madrid were linked with scheduled air services, thereby establishing a permanent bridge between Spain and Canada, with the specific purpose of promoting cultural/commercial and touristic movements between the two countries.

The original route was operated by DC8-63 aircraft, 3 times a week, henceforth with the B747 Jumbos which became the preferred way to fly from Madrid to Montreal (and vice versa) on the one hand, and Montreal to Mexico City (and vice versa), 4 times a week.

After increased demand and with new technology, a decision was made in 1991 to connect Spain and Maxico City non-stop, shaving off approximately 2 1/2 hours from the previous total flying time and more importantly operate the Canada-Spain route independently.

Since 1991, the number of passengers has doubled, a clear sign of the potential of the business and tourist market between Canada and Spain.

In 1994, the total number of passengers carried on the 5 weekly flights surpassed 30,000. A decision was taken to permanently separate Montreal and Toronto, resulting in non-stop operations from the 2 most important Easterns Canadian gateways to the Spanish Capital.

Iberia Airlines, its principal mission being, to provide optimum passenger and cargo service between Canada and Spain and vice versa, of course should not and cannot limit itself to just connecting the 2 countries. As a major international airline, it partakes in other potential markets.

Extensive marketing efforts have positioned Madrid as the springboard to the Mediterranean, geographically close to Portugal, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria, Greece, Turkey, as well as Israel, Egypt and Lebanon.

Air Canada and Iberia Airlines of Spain have concluded a comprehensive commercial agreement on the Canada-Spain routes, permiting deep penetration on both sides of the Atlantic.

Western Canada has become closer to Spain with the non-stop service to/from Toronto especially with the use of the same terminal (Terminal II) transfer, Air Canada to Iberia (and vice versa), by virtue of the aforementioned agreement.
