All Spanish students under the age of 28 and registered at Spanish institutions of higher education are included in a students' insurance fund. This fund will gradually be transferred into the social security system, however, as a special entity.

The students' insurance fund aldo caters for a considerable number of students from other countries as a result of reciprocal agreements. Students from European Union States are among those equally covered by this programme. Students over the age of 28 are strongly advised to take out additional private insurance, primarily to cover medical care and other services.
