For a course of study at a Spanish institution of higher education, a good knowledge of Spanish is imperative, as courses and lectures are generally conducted in Spanish. It should be noted that in the Autonomous Communities where there is a second official language (Catalonian in Catalunya and on the Balearic Islands, Basque in the Basque Country and in Navarre, Galician in Galicia and Valencian in Valencia), some lectures may be held in those languages.

The universities and other educational establishments themselves offer a variety of courses in Spanish for foreign students. The language and literature courses offered by the Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo are well-known around the world, and they are offered in summer; here a wide range of courses other than Spanish language is offered too.
