The scholarship system administered by the Ministry of Education and Science applies only to students with Spanish citizenship or those with legal residence in Spain. Furthermore, there are other forms of financial assistance for foreign students. It is granted by different national institutions based on bilateral agreements between Spain and onther countries or programmes for specific academic and research purposes.

For these, it is highly recommended that applicants collect general information and, in particular, consult the following: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and especially the Spanish Embassy in the country concerned. Students from Latin America should address their inquiries to the Instituto de Cooperacion Iberoamericana. Other State and private institutions grant financial assistance to a limited extent. In any case, it is imperative that students submit their applications for a grant or financial assistance at the earliest opportunity and always before arrival in Spain.

Concerning Canada, the Government of Spain offers five renewable awards every year for studies or research at the doctoral level to Canadians holding the equivalent of a Canadian undergraduate university degree. The awards are for twelve months (subject to modification), commencing in October. Candidates must have an excellent knowledge of Spanish. Studies or research in medicine or related fields cannot be accommodated. Applications for postdoctoral research are not accepted under this program.

The Scholarship Include:

• 12 monthly payments from October to September.
• free registration in any Spanish Official Centre, if recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science.
• life and medical insurance, excluding prescription drugs.

A certificate of acceptance from the applicant's host university or college in Spain and a medical certificate are required.

All documents must be accompained by certified translations into Spanish.

Note that travel and other complementary expenses are not covered.
