Minister of the Interior

Born in San Sebastián on 12th July 1951.
Married, with four children.
Agricultural Engineer.
He joined UCD in 1977 where, among other positions, he became General Secretary for Guipúzcoa and Assistant Secretary for International Relations. Adviser on Tourism in the Pre- autonomous Government of 1990. Member for Guipúzcoa in 1980.
In 1982, he was appointed Government representative in the Basque Country.
In 1984 he was the Coalición Popular candidate for Lehendakari in the Basque Autonomous Elections. During the 1984-1986 legislature he was the spokesman for Coalición Popular in the Basque Parliament.
In 1989 he was appointed political manager of the campaign for the European elections by the Partido Popular.
In 1989 he was also appointed President of the Partido Popular Management in the Basque Country.
A Member of Parliament for Vizcaya in 1989. He renounced his seat in order to stand as the Partido Popular candidate for Lehendakari in the Basque elections of 1990.
Member of the National Executive Committee of the Partido Popular.
President of the Partido Popular in the Basque Country.
Partido Popular candidate for Lehendakari in the autonomous elections in the Basque Country in 1994. He has been President and spokesman for the Partido Popular in the Basque Parliament.
Appointed General Vice Secretary of the PP at the XIIth National PP Congress (February 1996).
National Member of Parliament for Alava in the VIth Legislature.
He was appointed Minister of the Interior on 5th May 1996.

Adhère à l'UCD en 1977, où il occupe entre autres les postes de secrétaire général de Guipúzcoa et de secrétaire adjoint aux Relations internationales. Elu député autonomique en 1980. Conseiller au Tourisme du Gouvernement préautonomique en 1980. Elu député de Guipúzcoa en 1980.
Nommé délégué du Gouvernement au Pays basque en 1982.
Désigné par la Coalition populaire candidat à Lehendakari aux élections Régionales basques. Porte-parole de la Coalition populaire au Parlement basque pendant la Législature 1984-86.
Nommé directeur de campagne du Parti populaire pour les élections européennes en 1989.
Nommé Président du Comité de coordination du Parti populaire au Pays basque en 1989.
Député de Biscaye aux Cortès en 1989. Renonce à son siège pour se présenter comme candidat à Lehendakari du Parti populaire aux élections basques de 1990.
Membre du Comité exécutif national du Parti populaire.
Président du Parti populaire au Pays basque.
Candidat à Lehendakari du Parti populaire aux élections Régionales basques de 1994. Président et porte-parole du Groupe populaire au Parlement basque.
Nommé vice-secrétaire général du PP au XIIe Congrès national du PP (Février 1996).
Député national du PP (Alava) sous la VIe Législature.
Nommé Ministre de l'Intérieur le 5 Mai 1996.

Ministro de Interior

Nació en San Sebastián el 12 de julio de 1951.
Casado, con cuatro hijos.
Ingeniero agrónomo.
En 1977 ingresó en UCD, donde desempeñó entre otros cargos el de secretario general de Guipúzcoa y secretario adjunto de Relaciones Internacionales. En 1980 fue elegido Parlamentario autonómico. Consejero de Turismo del Gobierno preautonómico en 1980. En 1980, diputado por Guipúzcoa.
En 1982, fue designado delegado del Gobierno en el País Vasco.
En 1984 se presenta a las Elecciones Autonómicas Vascas como candidato a Lehendakari por Coalición Popular. Durante la Legislatura 1984-1986 es portavoz de Coalición Popular en el Parlamento Vasco.
En 1989 es nombrado director político para la campaña de las elecciones europeas por el Partido Popular.
En 1989 es nombrado Presidente de la Gestora del Partido Popular en el País Vasco.
Diputado a Cortes por Vizcaya en 1989. Renuncia a su escaño para presentarse como candidato del Partido Popular a Lehendakari en las elecciones vascas de 1990.
Miembro del Comité Ejecutivo Nacional del Partido Popular.
Presidente del Partido Popular en el País Vasco.
Candidato del Partido Popular a Lehendakari en las elecciones autonómicas del País Vasco de 1994. Ha sido presidente y portavoz del Grupo Popular en el Parlamento Vasco.
Nombrado vicesecretario general del PP en el XII Congreso Nacional del PP (febrero 1996).
Diputado Nacional del PP por Alava en la VI Legislatura.
